THE TIME IS NOW

     
a fisherman sails
comes back empty-handed
currents have moved, the fish have left the bay;
a town in Alaska
falls in the ocean
ice turns to mud, the future slides away;
it’s here and now, that’s all I’ve got to say;

deeper today
smoke on the forest
scars on the mountain, the seas we sail asleep;	
sharper today
cracks in the ice field
the air we breathe, the tears we need to weep;        
we know too much to look the other way;

	the word we shout, the walls we shake
	the surge, nothing can hold it and the dam breaks
	  -  don’t need me to show you how

	and we know what the time is  -  
	the time is now
				
higher today
odds on a burn-out
panic in boardrooms, pressure for delay;
but under the leaves
mother invention
opens her eyes and counts another day;
it’s down to us, that’s all she’s got to say;

	the paths we forge, the world we make
	the step we never meant to, the brilliant mistake
	  -  don’t need me to show you how

	and we know what the time is  -  
	the time is now
